Inspired by our work with mycelium and fungi over the last three years, Sapro-Tech’s latest creation is a patent pending material that is an industry breakthrough. Using 100% natural materials derived from fungi and plants, Sapro-Tech has created a leather material that rivals animal leather in performance. The result: a sustainable, cost effective and competitive leather that is biodegradable and both animal- and plastic-free.
Sapro-Tech is already producing samples for our pioneer partners to make prototype products from.
This advancement accelerates our timeline and milestone development by over one year, with probable first revenues inside 12 months from November, 2024.
The Sapro-Tech next generation material:
Our biopolymer material has very low GHG emissions and includes no toxic chemicals (unlike animal leather) and no plastics (unlike vegan leather/polyurethane)
The process for manufacture is simple, scalable and automatable
The material has similar physical properties to leather such as tensile strength and water resistance
Has significant & flexible profiles from colours to softness and durability
Has great scalability for production purposes; and
a promising unit economics and emissions profile
While Sapro-Tech’s technical workstreams do not radically change, the time to commercialization is greatly reduced and simplified.
Sapro-Tech is now focused on:
Producing samples for our pioneer partners to make prototype products, provide feedback & confirm initial orders
Moving into low-scale production planning for our partners for supply from Q3, 2025
Further enhancements and internal testing to confirm technical performance parity with animal leather, alongside independent lab verification; and
Creating more end state forms of the material including colours, finish and learning about what is required to produce each form
We will also be undertaking a full techno-economic and LCA assessment in 2025, leading to a pilot plant build in 2026.
Our commercial focus is to serve our pioneer partners (YY Nation, SABEN, taylor boutique & Velvet Heartbeat) and to add further international partners, and new uses, as we look to expand the geographic focus of our company.
